Voices in Wax // Concert and Lecture about Evald Tang Kristensen

Evald Tang Kristensen (1843–1929) dedicated his life to collecting songs, legends, and stories from the rural population of the Jutland heath. He had a special connection to the Vejle area, and his extensive work has preserved an important part of our local cultural history. That's why a room in ENGEN has been named after him. We are celebrating this with a concert and lecture featuring the duo 'Voices in Wax,' where musicians Ulla Bendixen and Martin Ottosen combine live music with historical recordings and stories from the Jutland heath.

The music is based on more than 100-year-old recordings of folk songs, recorded on wax cylinders with a phonograph. The old voices come to life in evocative interpretations with vocals, a hurdy-gurdy, mandolin, and piano. Along the way, the duo tells about Evald Tang Kristensen's tireless work and the people whose songs and stories he saved from oblivion.

The audience will also have the opportunity to experience a working phonograph and participate in knitting communal rugs that grow from concert to concert, inspired by the heath's old meeting places.

About 'Voices in Wax': Behind the duo 'Voices in Wax' are Ulla Bendixen and Martin Ottosen, both central members of the award-winning orchestra 'Sorten Muld.' For 30 years, they have been working to renew Nordic folk music. In 2025, they released the album 'Voices in Wax,' which received five stars in GAFFA.

Free admission - remember to book your ticket.

The concert and lecture are part of the opening program for ENGEN Cultural Center and Library.
