In the Shadow of the Lemon
Inge-Lis Gaardsted (1959)
Spinderihallerne presents an exhibition full of energy and power, with the lemon as a core element in an artistic process. Inge-Lis Gaardsted (1959) paints with bold strokes, where glowing pigments create a lemon-yellow color. She was taught the use of the lemon during her studies in the mid-1990s as an advanced form that insistently demands light and shadows. The fruit has followed Gaardsted ever since as a tool – as a starting point – as a shadow. The exhibition testifies to a personal artistic journey in form, colors, and materials, but also serves as a starting point for a conversation about the perfect, the immediate, and the central.
Gaardsted works with the lemon as a motif with a sensuality and materiality that demonstrate technical skill for the smooth, yet rough skin, the luxurious oval shape, and the intense yellow color. She is interested in the circular use of the lemon to learn from her own process.
The lemon as a fruit is a recurring theme in art history, from religious meanings to social comments and aesthetic explorations. Painters such as Mie Mørkeberg, Emily Gernild, and Michael Kvium paint lemons as central props in everyday scenes and utopian environments with interpretations of art history and cultural heritage.
