In the novel Skyggen foran mig (The Shadow Before Me), we follow a man who is released from prison after many years. He has committed a murder and is now trying to find out who he is outside of prison, and whether there is a way forward. The story moves between the time before, during, and after his imprisonment, and explores themes such as guilt, shame, grief, faith, and social inheritance.
This evening, Kim Fupz Aakeson will be in conversation with prison chaplain Tove Madsen about the novel and the questions it raises. What does it mean to atone? What does guilt do to a person? And what are the possibilities for forgiveness and a new beginning when one has done something that cannot be undone?
Along the way, we will also talk to Kim Fupz Aakeson about his work on the novel, his research, and his interest in people who find themselves in moral gray areas.
